Now that 2025 has rolled around, the hybrid console of Nintendo surprises again. Although the life of the original Nintendo Switch has passed, the original still sells at full speed at the best stores, including GameStop and Best Buy. And at the same time, insane speculation of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 grows around the entire world.
The original switch continues to dominate sales rankings
Based on new retail data, the Nintendo Switch resides next to new consoles. Price cuts, bundles, and Nintendo’s widely available first-party games – that being Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – are supporting the system.
GameStop and Best Buy, according to reports, both experienced sales increases in the summer clearance, an unexpected turn of events considering how late in the cycle we are in the Switch’s life. Ongoing demand is a testament to the software-focused approach of Nintendo and the potential of nostalgia content.
The Switch 2: What We Know So Far
Leaks of the Nintendo Switch 2 – colloquially enough among gamers dubbed the “Super Switch” – are making headlines again. Bloomberg sources, however, indicate the console will allegedly be available in the developer community in Q1 2026 at the earliest, with even some of the devs reportedly receiving dev kits. It will allegedly keep the hybrid home/portable console shape but will be powered by new hardware that will have ray tracing, DLSS, and backwards compatibility support.
But the excitement is about what Nintendo will be offering in conjunction with the new console. With numerous industry execs commenting, the long tradition of Nintendo has been to package new gear with a flagship software game, a “killer app” that launches the sales train.
Thus far, speculation has been that Nintendo would put out another Metroid Prime or Mario title to take the position. Others are hoping for a day-one Zelda sequel or completely new IP to shake things up, however.
Why a “Killer App” Matters
On the console side of the accounting ledger, the hardware is just half the equation. What drive system sales are the games. The release of the original Switch with Breath of the Wild was the ultimate example of console-and-software synergy, something Nintendo will replicate.
Whereas PlayStation and Xbox are highly committed to cloud and live-service titles, Nintendo has invested in strong, flagship titles that reach broad audiences – children through veteran adults.
Final Thoughts
While Switch 1 remains in demand and Switch 2 makes all the noise, Nintendo, as always, is in the right direction by innovating continuously in terms of design as well as by providing ingenious games. Whether the next gen will be a success or will not be remains likely to be based upon the game in the box. One thing we can be certain about: Switch 2 era is around the bend, and players and stores are ready for another Nintendo-led explosion.
